Shukapeu: four years adapting our services to Indigenous men

The “strong man” project is wrapping up, and its tools are here to stay.

About 15% of the men who walk through our door are Indigenous. From 2022 to 2026, the Shukapeu project (“strong man” in Innu-aimun) helped us make our services reflect who they are: consultations in the community, traditional art and an Innu library in our space, Innu-aimun translations, father-child camping at Lac Walker, a winter campsite with a yurt, fitness sessions in Maliotenam, booths on the Day for Truth and Reconciliation, and much more.

The project also gave rise to three shareable tools: the mural of the 10 intervention keys, the Natashtau program and an Indigenous component of the “Working with men” training. Thank you to Quebec's Secrétariat à la condition féminine and the 25 partners who made this project possible. Tshinashkumitin!
